Every online instructor hopes that they will have a class full of highly engaged and motivated students. For the most part students are involved in their class to varying degrees; some are very active and visible in the class while other students complete only the minimum requirements. On occasion, a student may start out strong and quickly lose steam as the class progresses or they are barely present to begin with and then at one point disappear. Sometimes an outreach attempt will be made as a means of re-engaging the student. If the student falls under the radar because they are not present, and the instructor does not intervene, they will likely become disengaged from the class and eventually withdrawn or be dropped because minimum attendance requirements were not met.

Signs and Symptoms

An instructor can only gauge the level of involvement of an online student by the frequency of their interactions in the classroom. Without any other visual cue an assumption can be made that a student who has made only a few minimal posts is uninterested in the class. Another means of determining a student's interest in the class is with the quality of the assignments that are submitted. If an assignment has been partially completed, or not submitted at all, once again it is possible an instructor may assume the student simply does not care. This is especially true when corrective feedback has been provided and the problem or issue continues. With an online class an instructor may equate a lack of effort with a lack of motivation, especially if the student does not maintain an active presence.

Possible Causes

When an online student is losing progress or failing the class, lack of motivation may be assumed to be the possible cause. While motivation is likely going to factor into the equation to some extent, there is usually more involved. Rarely does a student intentionally set out to fail the course. This is why a needs assessment becomes a necessary facilitation strategy for students who seem to lack motivation. There are many possible causes, starting with uncertainty about the course requirements, the instructor's expectations, or a particular assignment. It is possible that the student had a negative experience or interaction with another student or misunderstood something the instructor indicated in their feedback. Or perhaps they are not seeing the results expected from their work or the effort put into the class.

For newer students, the underlying reason for most of the issues that experience is related to being unprepared for the course. Online students usually have a variety of skills but at the beginning of their program they may lack academic preparedness. Most students will eventually develop an effective routine and utilize the resources available so that they are able to make steady progress through the class. But on occasion a student may simply not understand how to become involved in the learning process and need additional guidance from their instructor. Whatever the issue may be, if there is not an attempt made to resolve the undering issue it can result in frustration and disengagement from the course.

Possible Solutions

A student's involvement in an online class is relational in nature. When students participate in a discussion they are developing relationships with each other. They will likely become engaged in these discussions when they feel encouraged to participate. When students submit an assignment, ask a question, or review feedback provided, a relationship is established with the instructor. This requires an instructor to be available, accessible, and more importantly, approachable. If a student believes there is open two-way communication with their instructor it will increase the likelihood that they will reach out to them when there is a problem.

When a student is struggling and not asking for assistance, it is time to begin making outreach attempts. To begin a needs assessment it becomes necessary to develop productive conversations with the student. This can be accomplished when the student is approached from a supportive perspective so they are encouraged to respond. A simple question such as “how can I help?” may be an effective starting point. Once the struggling student begins to respond the underlying issues can be explored and solutions developed. For example, if motivation is an issue the instructor can offer resources, strategies, and techniques for developing and sustaining self-motivation.

Address Causes, Not Symptoms

When students are self-sufficient and highly productive they are working at peak performance and have developed a sense of self-motivation. When a student is struggling, regardless of the reason, if they do not receive assistance their motivation will likely diminish. But rather than start with an assumption that every online student is losing progress because they are unmotivated, try to maintain ongoing communication with them and learn about their needs. It is only when the underlying causes are addressed, rather than the prevalent symptoms, that real progress can be made. Not every student is going to respond but those who do will likely reengage in the class and work towards improved performance.

Students eventually learn to meet the minimum requirements, which can include a specific word count and required number of weekly posts. However, the development of substantive responses takes time and practice. To jumpstart their involvement in class discussions students need a well-defined strategy that can be applied to every week of the class, regardless of the topic.

The manner in which a discussion question is written will influence the quality of the initial responses posted. When discussion questions are one-dimensional in nature and do not expect students to do anything more than provide a general answer, students will post replies that offer little substance. Even if a discussion question is multilayered students will likely treat it in a similar manner and post reactive responses, which are quick responses based upon what they actually know about the subject. This is especially true for students who are working from mobile devices and do not take time to conduct further research or work through their ideas.

Class participation is an aspect of online discussions that students rarely look forward to because it takes time to read through the posts and find one that may be of interest. The most common response begins with “I agree” and then a few comments are added to it. But agreement is irrelevant when you consider the overall scope and purpose of the discussion. What matters most is the students' ability to engage in a conversation and continue the discussion. Regardless of the nature of the discussion questions or the posts within the discussion threads, it is possible for students to craft well-developed responses if they allocate time and follow a structured process.

Discussion Question Responses

Every discussion question response that students create must be considered similar to a written assignment. Create your post in a separate document so that it can be worked on over a period of time, such as one or two days. This means that a well balanced schedule for each class week does more than notate a due date for the discussion question, it also breaks up the development of the response over time. What weaknesses most discussion question responses is that students begin writing a response based upon what they know or how they react, and then they use it as their final post. But that is only the starting point. Writing from a perspective of what you know does not help you learn.

Each discussion question response needs to be developed as a mini essay, complete with an introduction, body, and meaningful conclusion. Begin the process by jotting down your initial thoughts about the subject. Next, make time to explore the assigned readings and take notes as you find information relevant to the discussion question. Compare what you've read to what you know and then determine if this is enough to build a meaningfulful reply. Generally that will not be enough information and a search for credible academic sources can help bolster the content and quality of your post. A good place to start is the online library as you are likely to find credible sources. If the Internet is utilized make sure that sources are evaluated for reliability, accuracy, relevance, and timeliness.

Once additional information has been obtained do not simply restate what you have acquainted; synthesize or process it with your knowledge of the topic and information gained from the course materials. From that point you can make well-informed and persuasive statements. Instead of using phrases such as “I feel” or “I believe” you now have a base of knowledge to work from and it provides you with insights that will promote interactive discussions. You can also add relevant examples from your background or career to further illustrate what you've learned.

Participation Posts

Once a well-developed discussion question response has been posted, do not consider that your involvement in the discussions with other students to be nearly concluded. There is a difference between posting a reply to another student and talking at them, and posting a reply that engages them in a two-way conversation. This means that time must be invested in the development of your participation posts and created in a manner similar to the discussion question responses. Of course you may not need to acquire additional sources of information for your post; however, it does take time to develop engaging responses.

To begin, find a post that you connect with in some way and then copy a sentence or two from that response into another document. Take time to build from what you have copied by considering what you know, what you've read in the course materials, and what you've acquired through complementary sources. Visualize sitting in front of this student and talking with them about the subject matter. What information would you share with them? What questions would you ask them about their response? The most effective method of generating a reply to your participation post is to ask a follow-up question at the end. Not only are you likely to receive a reply back you will also enjoy the process because this is an opportunity to gain additional insights and perspectives about the topics.

Boring or Meaningful

Online class discussions can be challenging, boring, and filled with responses that clearly resemble each other. Or, class discussions can provide an opportunity to learn with the development of well-researched and well-developed posts that promote two-way communication and collaboration among students. Every discussion holds a potential to be meaningful in nature regardless of how the discussion questions are written or the quality of replies posted by other students. Students can improve their engagement in the discussions and jumpstart their participation by taking the time necessary to become well-informed about the topics and approach their posts in a manner similar to written assignments – structured, substantive, and engaging.

Casey also wrote along this line and said: “So much time is taken up settling a class and dealing with others that have behavior problems. Online education eliminates this and you can just get on with studying.”

Brendon says that “Online Education is the same as Traditional Education as it is really still teaching but just done in another way.”

Susan says: “Teaching is really standardized online and the same material can be taught to everyone. learners. “This means each person can learn at his or her own pace.”

Other opinions from parents were that there are better opportunities as there are greater choices of subjects as at a traditional school. That online education lectures self-discipline, whereas in school you have discipline.
